Get a Google+ page for your business

Google+ is gaining some momentum within the social media arena, so it might be time to set up a Google+ page for your business.

Here are a couple of tips for creating your Google+ page:

1. Before you start take a look at the competition. Check out how they are interacting with their customers. If you’re a competitor you will find that many people within their circles will be the same as yours with a direct interest in your products and services.

2. Look for the right people and brand to follow:  Taking back in hangouts and engaging with your potential followers is key to making the most of any social media you partake in.  Hangouts are great for chatting to like minded people, be it your customers or people within your industry.  A lot of small businesses we speak to have used hangouts to find suppliers.

3. Be creative and provide your followers with active content they look forward to reading about.

Why are keywords important in search?

Arguably keywords are one of the most important elements within your SEO strategy. Whatever your potential visitors are searching for needs to match your sites keywords in order to optimise your results.

Choose the right keywords

Nowadays the Internet is so populated with websites that the days of reaching the top search spots easily are a distant memory.  It’s time now to narrow your focus, aim to reach and maintain the top spots for your most valuable keywords, maybe two or three character search strings are more realistic goals.

The first step is to decide on the words or phrases that best describe your websites content. For example, Siteopia is focused on Domain Names, but we look further and often focus on search stings such as registering a Domain Name.

You know your website users enough to have an understanding on what they will be searching on in order to find your site.  There are also various keyword tool generator suggestion services you can use for free.

When deciding on your keywords, think not only about the number of searches conducted for that keyword but also about the relevancy of the word to your website.  The higher the relevancy is to your page, the higher change you have of your user getting to a page that is of actual use to them. Imagine if we had a keyword on Domain Name History and the searcher was taken to a registration page. It’s likely then that they would not be interested in conducting a search and they would leave our page just as quickly as they reached it.

Once selected, think density

Now you have an aim and know what keywords you want to focus upon,  make your website keyword rich. Although no longer a highly influential factor in SEO, keyword density will help with your page relevancy. Ensure that you’re not just littering your pages with keywords, but writing good copy that includes good placement of your key phrases.

Now think keyword location

Where you can, think about where you use your keywords. It could be in your Domain address itself. Don’t go overboard with this, remember that your Domain Name still needs to be memorable and catchy.

Try to use your keywords for file names and directories as search engines will give preference to keywords within a file name and it all adds to the relevancy of your pages.

Using keywords in headings and titles

Where you can, your keywords should be used in your page titles and headings.  Headings separate your text into related content and the more these headings can contain your keywords the better your content will be.  Think about what you store as your H1, H2 and H3 title text and ensure you are using your keywords across each.

Browsing the Internet via smartphone is becoming increasingly popular. According to the Institute of Direct and Digital Marketing up to 28% of all Internet browsing is now done on a mobile devise.

People are searching the web on their phones when they are traveling or simply need a quick access to information and saves the time of ‘logging on’

Phone companies have been quick to recognize the new trend, making sure that tariffs containing fixed data allowances are contained within their price plans in order to be competitive.

Has Panda affected your site?

When Google launched their new algorithm update, Panda, it was designed to remove websites with poor quality content from search listings.  Gone are the days when websites could throw up content that was simply packed full of keywords and added little or no new knowledge to the readers.

Instead Google are looking for websites that offer readable content that would genuinely interest readers, attracting recommendations and referrals from other quality sites.

There are a few simple tips that you can follow to adjust your site to survive Panda.

1. Do try to include Social Media as a traffic source, this will help with recommendations and peer to peer linking.

2. Double check your website for repeated content. Often people find that they have made duplicate points in order to try and get it noticed more, when in fact you only need to mention it once.

3. Check what is above your fold.  What you don’t want to do is force your visitors to scroll down your page to much in order to find the information they are looking for.  Try not to have lots of adverts above the fold and make sure your main headline/article or products are clearly visible.
