Common Domain Name Questions
We frequently get asked some common questions about registering Domain Names, so we’ve put together a few of them here:
How many characters can my domain contain?
The maximum length of a Domain Name is 63 characters.
Does it matter if I use upper and lower case?
No, it doesn’t matter. Domain Names are not case sensitive, so you can display your name on literature either way and the user will still reach your website.
How can I register a Domain Name?
Domain Name providers will provide a search facility on their websites. Use the search to enter any domains you are looking to register. The search will give you the results for the availability of your chosen Domain. If your first choice is already registered, try searching again with a different extension or try a slight variation of your name.
How many Domains can I register?
You can register as many Domain Names as you want to. Most providers give you a Control Panel where you can manage your Domain Names online from your own account.
Do I need a Domain Name to set up a Website?
Yes, ideally you will need a Domain Name. It is the address of your website. So unless your web design company is providing you with a Domain, it is important to register your Domain Name as soon as possible.
Do I need to have a website ready before I register my domain?
No, once you register your domain name you don’t have to start using it instantly. If your still in the process of building your own website or don’t want to put a website on that domain name, then that is fine. Most domain providers will put up a holding page on your domain, informing any visitors that the domain is registered. They may also give you the option of creating your own ‘page’ where you can display contact details and your logo for example. Of course, should you have registered multiple Domain Names and want them all to re-direct to your main site, you can do this at any time – usually via your Control Panel.
